Early in 1863, thirteen men and boys were executed after being taken prisoner by the Confederate Sixty-Fourth North Carolina Volunteer Infantry.  This incident  is described in the collection of documents indexed below, as well as other related acts.

    At the time of the incidents, Merrimon was NC Attorney General.  After the war, he became a North Carolina Superior Court Judge, served 6 years as a U.S. Senator and Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court in Raleigh, N.C.
